Johann-Markus Batke is employed as the professor for communications engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer. Prior to his Professorship, he was a researcher for industry at the Technicolor research labs based in Hannover for ten years. He earned his doctoral degree from the technical University of Berlin while performing research between 1999 and 2004 on query by humming systems for melody based music retrieval. He studied electrical engineering at the Leibniz University in Hannover between 1990 and 1997. His interests concentrate in the field of signal processing. Specifically, in particular acoustical signal processing and Higher Order Ambisonics.
